'Do the Twist'

Last week in dance we participated in a lesson prepared for grade 5's that was cross curricular with a science unit.
Our job was to develop an action phrase including 8 Action Pak words, as well as a beginning and an ending shape to demonstrate the relationship between pulleys and gears.
As we created our phrases our instructor circulated the room and spoke to us about our creative process as well as questioned us about our knowledge on pulleys and gears. It was amazing to hear all of the students speak so comfortably and knowledgeably about a topic and still produce such a variety of creations.
Here is a little snippet of one of the groups performances...

During our debrief our instructor mentioned how her intention for circulating and prompting discussion with each group was to demonstrate an opportunity for summative assessment we had not previously thought about. The activity taught us that providing students with an opportunity to discuss and demonstrate their understanding through dance is a great way to assess their knowledge and understanding of the overall expectations that had been studied throughout a unit while also assessing dance expectations. It is also a great opportunity to attend to the needs of learners who do not perform as strongly when tested in a traditional 'paper to pencil' format.
